Nova Scotia Residents: Preparing for Hurricane Earl
September 2, 2010
The Dominion recommends Nova Scotia residents follow these preparations to protect themselves, their family and their home from Hurricane Earl:
- Choose a safe place for your family to sit out of the storm away from windows and doors.
- Avoid beaches and coastal areas.
- Prepare an emergency kit. Include food, water, clothing, blankets, flashlight, battery-powered radio, extra batteries, first-aid kit, prescription medications and copies of important papers.
- Prepare alternate ways to help keep food cold in case of a power outage. For example, prepare freezer ice packs by placing water-filled soda or plastic milk containers in deep freezers.
- Have extra cash on hand.
- Offer to help others in your neighbourhood.
- Secure objects that could be torn loose by strong winds.
- Protect your home from heavy rain.
- Ensure that you have adequate fuel for your generator, vehicle, etc.
- Finally, have your insurance policy information on hand.
